Martin Schwellnus is a full professor of Sport and Exercise Medicine at the Faculty of Health Sciences, University of Pretoria in South Africa. He is a registered specialist Sports and Exercise Medicine physician and is the Director of the Sport, Exercise Medicine and Lifestyle Institute (SEMLI) at the University of Pretoria, has been the Director of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) Research Center in South Africa for the last 14 years.
He has a clinical and research interest in several areas in sport and exercise medicine, notably the health benefits of regular exercise, the prevention and management of injuries, acute infections and exercise, and the prevention of medical complications in active individuals. He promotes the safe prescription of regular exercise to all populations to reduce the global burden of non-communicable disease. He is an active researcher and has published over 400 scientific journal articles, chapters in books and conference proceedings.
